 Investing in our Community

Economic Empowerment through Education

WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMES

Retail School of Excellence mission with our community outreach programmes are:

  • To support individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in entering the economy, through skills development, increasing their self-esteem, confidence and ability to enter the job market.
  • Investing in our community; economic empowerment through education.
  • Supplying the South African retail industry with highly skilled sale staff.

We would like to build a National footprint for learners to have access to digital learning centers in their local communities in order to gain access to our National Certificate, learnership programs and short courses as well as to seek job placements for all learners at their local retailers.
Whether you are a school, church, private company or individual that would like to make a difference in your community you can join our program in the following ways:
  • Sponsoring a digital learning center/computer center at your establishment or funding a digital learning center in your area
  • Making your school/Church or building available for Retail School of Excellence to deliver afternoon/morning or weekend lectures for students in your community
  • Money contributions – sponsor a learner or part of a learner’s yearly study fees
  • Job placements – if you are a retailer and would like to offer employment opportunities for our learners to gain practical experience during their year of study. All our learners have to complete a certain amount of practical hours in order to complete their certificate. You are under NO obligation to give our learners permanent employment after their year of study however our aim is to place 75% of our learners in permanent positions after completion of their National Certificate.

Currently we are helping out at the Kuyasa Horizon Empowerment Centre in Kyamandi Western Cape teaching classes on various retail qualification to local residents that is of enormous value to those who have been out of the workforce for a while.Helping be a part of something that's bigger than yourself will deliver happiness in your life. Please view our current statistics on students that receive sponsored education through Retail school of Excellence. We would like to ask you to become part of this wonderful program and to sponsor a student or donate towards someone’s future.

At Retail School of Excellence we stand behind the belief that effective empowerment is critical to the future success of every learner. In partnership with Urban Academy – a non-profit private High school in Port Elizabeth we have dedicated ourselves to proactively participate in the transformation of South Africa and its youth.

Urban Academy was established in 2012. The need for a caring education facility was identified along with the need to provide education in an urban school for even those who previously could not attend a school.
A partnership with churches and the community resulted in an educational model where even the neediest could be taken care of alongside the students from more affluent communities.
Retail School of Excellence joined Urban Academy to offer their learners and members of their community the opportunity to gain a National Certificate with an option of the following specialization areas: Retail sales, Stock control, Sales and preparation of perishable foods as well as a number of retail related short courses for those individuals that are not financially able to further their studies at formal Institutions.
Urban Academy has invested heavily towards the establishment of a digital learning Centre at their school in order to help learners gain access to this exciting opportunity. To make this opportunity available and accessible for a number of learners who want to pursue a career in retail, Urban Academy will be donating 50% of the training and programme fees for each student.

For further information on course choices, registrations, 2017 Class Calendar and fees please contact urban@www.devio.bebrilliant.academy or chris@urbanacademy.co.za

“Not only do we want to equip our learners but our aim is to create a sustainable economy for ourselves and the community around us. We are striving to make education affordable to all our learners and with the help of our local community we are hoping to raise enough funds to give this opportunity to more than just a selected few. We welcome any donations whether big or small that will help spark learning in the next generation!”

What is a Learnership?

A learnership is a form of work-based or ‘on-the-job’ training which results in an NQF-registered qualification, and is therefore a method to fast track the development of current employees or unemployed learners to acquire qualifications as an alternative to formal academic studies.

Learnerships are linked to the Skills Development Strategy, and are seen as an important way of addressing the skills shortages in South Africa.

Learnerships can be:

  • Funded (discretionary) or unfunded (self-funded by the company).
  • Applicable for employed staff (section 18.1) or unemployed learners (section 18.2).

Learnerships must have the following elements:

  • Registered with the Department of Labour.
  • A formal training component (classroom environment) approximately 30% of the training provided.
  • An on-job component (training provided in the workplace) approximately 70% of the training provided.
  • Takes place over a period of between twelve (12) and eighteen (18) months.
  • It must result in a full registered National Qualification.
  • Training must be provided by an accredited training provider.
  • Delivery of a programme is based on a Learnership Agreement, which is a contract between a learner, an employer, and a training provider for a specified period.
  • A host employer and a workplace context to provide the work exposure and practical training, must be provided.

Unemployed Learners

What are the benefits of participating in a learnership?

  • You will obtain a qualification which will put you in a better position to obtain employment.
  • You earn while you learn.
  • You will have evidence of having been “employed” for a minimum period of twelve (12) months, while you participated in the learnership.

What are the criteria for unemployed learners to apply?

  • You do not have permanent employment nor studying elsewhere for 2 years.
  • You are aged between 21 and 35.
  • You have a clear credit and criminal record.
  • You are a South African Citizen.
  • You are motivated, keen to learn and willing to put in the effort to succeed.
  • You are interested in the retail industry

How does it work?

  • You need to apply for a learnership (please contact charlene@www.devio.bebrilliant.academy for an application form).
  • On acceptance, you will need to sign a Learnership Agreement.
  • The learner’s hip is a minimum of twelve (12) months duration.
  • You will be required to do classroom training or E-Learning, practical training and a combination of on-job training for practical experience.
  • You will need to invest some of your personal time to complete assignments and attend training/coaching sessions.
  • There are no direct costs for you to do the training.
  • A learner’s hip does not guarantee employment, however, Retail School of Excellence will support you in finding either contract work or full time employment after your learnership.

Please contact us at info@www.devio.bebrilliant.academy to discuss how you can get involved with our projects – we look forward to hearing from you.
